Job Description and Duties

Under general direction of the Information Technology Manager IT Mgr I of SQL Server Support, the Information Technology Specialist IT Spec II demonstrates a depth of leadership and expertise in one or more domains. The IT Spec II will perform a wide variety of tasks requiring innovative problem solving where guidance is not readily available. The IT Spec II will optimize and apply architecture solutions for the benefit of the overall organization and play a major role in advising management or formulating information technology strategy and policy within the organization. The IT Spec II typically work in the Software Engineering, Information Security Engineering, Information Technology Project Management, or System Engineering domains.  

The IT Spec II may perform feasibility studies and research analysis related to technology projects; provide information technology consultation in support of business programs; establish inventory management guidelines; work closely with customers and other Office of Technology Services (OTech) service units in the analysis of business/technical requirements, product specifications, application integration support, and network / portal design necessary to develop and implement MS SQL/MySQL server components, functions, migration assessments; provide metrics on service level agreements; install or repair hardware or peripheral equipment; develop, implement, and maintain security and privacy training; investigate security incidents; develop and/or review data sharing agreements prior to release of confidential information; monitor project milestones and deliverables; coordinate and consult with users, administrators, and engineers to identify business and technical requirements; develop and sustain cooperative working relationships with project stakeholders; perform software product deployment and release management activities; define and design software solutions; identify infrastructure system requirements and recommend technology, hardware, software, and plans installation; advise, create, or participate in the design of new system architecture, standards, and methods to support organizational needs; conduct research and perform analysis to recommend system upgrades, cost-effective solutions, and process improvements; troubleshoot, track, and conduct root cause analysis of system/database/operational issues; and act in a lead role over lower-level staff.


Telework
This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule within California based on the departmental policy and operational needs. The telework policy is subject to change depending on business needs, and/or reporting to the work site may be required with minimal notification.

Working Conditions

CA Residency:

  • Periodic weekend and off shift work may be required.
  • Must maintain consistent, predictable attendance.
  • Core Business hours are from 0800 to 1700 hours.
  • Occasional travel may be required to perform assigned duties, attend training, and provide customer support.
  • May be required to respond to after-hours support calls and carry a PDA.
  • Must pass a fingerprint background criminal record check completed by the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

  • Advanced level Knowledge and experience with Microsoft SQL server components like SSRS, SSAS, and SSIS.
  • Advanced level knowledge and use of Microsoft SQL/MySQL installs and maintenance updates including critical patch updates.
  • Advanced level knowledge and use of Microsoft SQL/MySQL System and Database Administration Tools.
  • Advanced level knowledge and use of Microsoft SQL/MySQL upgrade and migration strategies.
  • Advanced level knowledge of Microsoft SCOM, PowerShell scripting and Windows scripting and utilities
  • Advanced level knowledge and experience with Windows Server OS (Windows 2012, 2016) and clustering.
  • Knowledge of virtual server environments (Hyper-V and VMWare ESX1 5.5 or higher)
  • Understanding of Cloud Computing
  • Ability to work with a variety of technical and management staff
  • Excellent writing and communication skills.
