Department Overview:
Islamorada Fire Rescue is a Class 2 Fire Department rated by the Insurance Services Office (ISO).
Islamorada Fire Rescue (IFR) is a progressive fire department staffed by dedicated men and women committed to providing exceptional service to the community. Our organization cultivates a fraternal environment that emphasizes crew expertise in fire suppression and emergency medical services(EMS), while also supporting the personal growth and development of our members. We achiveve these objectives through a rigorous training program and a strong emphasis on education at all levels. By leveraging cutting-edge technology and maintaining an unwavering dedication to our profession, we consistently deliver services that exceed industry standards.
IFR currently employs 41 full-time Fire/EMS personnel, with 12 crew members on duty per shift. Operating on a 24/48-hour shift schedule, our team provides comprehensive Emergency Medical Services, Rescue, and Fire Suppression from three strategically located stations (19, 20, and 21) along our section of the Florida Keys. Each station is equipped with an Engine and Rescue unit, supplemented by a centrally positioned Ladder Truck. Recent years have witnessed substantial staffing increases and departmental growth, resulting in a stable workforce with minimual turnover, primarily due to retirements or the creation of new positions.
At IFR, we hold our candidates to the highest standards. Successful applicants are not merely hired; they must earn their position by completing our intensive on-boarding academy. If selected to attend, candidates should begin preparing immediately, as our training surpasses the Minimum Standards cirriculum. THis physically and mentally demanding program will test the limits of every recruits ability. Full-time positions will be awarded based on performance throughout the 3-week training period (subject to scheduling adjustments for holidays), during which recruits will receive daily evaluations assessing their knowledge, effort, achievement, and teamwork. Compensation during training will be provided at the reserve firefighter rate, commensurate with each recruits certification level (EMT or Paramedic).
Upon completion of the academy, top-performing recruits will be offered full-time employment. The remaining recruits will have the opportunity to join IFR as Reserve Firefighters, allowing for continued development and collaboration with a diverse range of our crew members. Reserve Firefighters must fulfill a minimum number of shifts per month and, while they do not recieve the same benefits package and fixed schedule as full-time staff, they are compensated at a higher hourly rate. As future full-time opening arise, eligible Reserve Firefighters will be given priorty consideration before external recruitment.
If you believe you have the dedication and resilience to join our ranks, please submit ALL requested documentation. Successful candidates will be contacted to schedule an in-person evaluation. We look forward to welcoming those who demonstrate the commitment and capability to become valued members of the Islamorada Fire Rescue family.
