Job Description

The Wasatch Charter School (WCS) seeks an Executive Director (ED) to lead our school. Reporting to the WCS Board of Directors, primary ED responsibilities focus on driving longer-term strategies to preserve and proactively refine the guiding principles that will drive organizational excellence for years to come. The ED collaborates with faculty and pedagogical staff, teaching assistants, an administrative team, and facilities. In the existing role, the ED leads an administrative team of 3-5 with a total staff of 120. Candidates are expected to demonstrate strategic and business acumen, empathetic communication and collaborative capacity. Perhaps most importantly, the candidate should hold a deep respect and appreciation for Waldorf educational philosophy and the Waldorf approach to education. 

JOB DESCRIPTION: EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Reports to: WCS Governing Board 

Employee Classification: Salaried, FT, Exempt

Salary based upon experience, benefit package included.

Education Requirements:

Minimum: Master’s Degree, or higher, in Relevant Field

Preferred: Waldorf Teacher Training or Equivalent Administrative Training / Certificate Teacher Licensure

General Description:  As a full time member of the Wasatch Charter School faculty and a leader within the school community, the Executive Director is responsible for leading a group of individuals whose foundation in pedagogy is based on the Waldorf School model guided by the principles taught by Rudolf Steiner and reflected in the Core Principles of Public Waldorf Education.The school’s Executive Director is responsible for the daily operations of the school and progress towards realizing the school’s mission and vision. The Executive Director serves a leadership and coordinating function with authority delegated from the Governing Board to ensure compliance, to hire and terminate employees, to oversee programs and operations, and to create a positive school culture. The Executive Director directly supervises, mentors, and evaluates the other directors and works along-side them to supervise, mentor and evaluate all employees.

Executive Director Specific Responsibilities:

Community Relations -- “Big Picture” & Strategic Planning

• Coordinate around agendas for all Board, Faculty and Administrative meetings
• Represent the school to the parents, students, and community, in a manner that creates a positive public image and promotes retention and new enrollment
• Participate with and help coordinate between the Faculty, the Administration, the Board, and Parent Council in the development, implementation, and communication of goals, objectives, policies, and procedures of the school
• Work with the Board, the Faculty, and the Administration to define and support the development goals and strategies for implementation
• Represent the school in community and professional meetings
• Oversee publication of the Annual Report, Newsletter, weekly notes, and back-to-school updates
• With Administrative Team, respond to crises and mitigate any residual concerns
• Serve as spokesperson to the school
• Attend & help coordinate school events

Administrative Coordination

• Facilitate weekly administration team meetings and create agendas
• Report from administration to Board, Parents, and Faculty
• Coordinate work plans, staff schedules, and meetings – support administrative team in working to their potential
• Schedule and oversee administrative staff and update job descriptions

Parent/Teacher/Student Relations

• Ombudsperson for staff, faculty, and parent difficulties, directs complaints to proper channels and facilitates meetings when necessary
• Respond to complaints and requests for information regarding school policies and curriculum standards
• Refer all parent concerns and student discipline problems to the appropriate teacher or staff member
• Oversee and participate in student discipline
• Coordinate activities with the Family Council
• Prepare and distribute Student Handbook

Hiring & Human Resources

• Conduct new faculty and staff orientations & coordinate ongoing trainings
• Work with Business Manager to oversee and manage employee benefits and salaries (with long-range plan for increasing salary and benefits)
• Maintain, distribute, and review up-to-date policies and procedure manuals related to personnel issues - Employee Handbook
• Oversee process for hiring and firing all personnel
• Prepare job descriptions and manage all personnel files
• Oversee licensing of personnel, criminal history background check, other state regulations
• Develop organizational structure and job responsibilities to ensure that all functions are being adequately staffed
• Oversee recording of teachers and licensure in CACTUS

Professional Development

• Oversee mentoring and evaluation of all staff
• Oversee all first aid, universal precautions, child abuse reporting, suicide prevention and CPR training
• Work with Pedagogical Director on plans for ongoing training, certification, mentoring and support for all faculty

Oversight of Compliance Issues

• Work with Governing Board to review policies
• Oversee activities related to 501c3 status
• Comply with state regulations and licensing requirements
• Protect good name of school
• Maintain permanent legal files
• Review and approve insurance policies, contracts for services and other relationships with vendors
• Review and approve contracts, computer systems installations, and approved capital projects
• Prepare and ensure the completion of required State Reports: UCAP, UCA, Assurances, CTE

Budgeting and Planning

• Work with Business Manager to project academic program needs, building and grounds needs, professional development expenses, and salaries and personnel costs
• Oversee budget preparation and budget projection with the finance committee for Board approval
• Monitor all changes for budget line-items
• Monitor planning and budgeting for all new projects, grants, and development activities
• Monitor spending levels, cash flow, and balance sheets
• Monitor spending levels, approve expenditures for line-items, and report variances
• Help direct fundraising efforts and priorities
• Oversee purchasing: priorities for supplies and furnishings, order submissions, and compliance with procurement guidelines

• With Facility Manager, project for future needs for current and future building
• Review and negotiate lease agreements
