Job Description and Duties

Under the direction of the Branch Chief, Office of Health and Safety (OHS), a Staff Services Manager I, the incumbent will independently manage the Department's Injury and Illness and Workplace Violence databases to track employee injuries and illnesses in compliance with Cal/ OSHA regulations, manage the workplace violence incidents and reporting database, track vehicle accidents, and administer the Department's Maintenance Safety Incentive Award program. The incumbent will provide technical expertise in resolving complex tasks and developing statistical reporting. Create and maintain databases, dashboards, and data collection tools using Microsoft Power Platform tools (Share Point, Power Apps, Power Automate, and Power Bl). Additionally, the incumbent will manage the intranet website for the OHS and perform trainings on safety and health topics.

Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the Associate Governmental Program Analyst exam. For those who do not have current eligibility (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) and/or who will be new to state civil services employment, you must be on the state examination list to be eligible for these positions. This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on Caltrans’s evolving telework policy. Caltrans supports telework, recognizing that in-person attendance may be required based on operational needs. Employees are expected to be able to report to their worksites with minimum notification if an urgent need arises. The selected candidate will be required to commute to the headquartered location as needed to meet operational needs. Business travel may be required, and reimbursement considers an employee’s designated headquartered location, primary residence, and may be subject to CalHR regulations or applicable bargaining unit contract provisions. All commute expenses to the headquartered location will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.

New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.

2. Task Management Under Tight Deadlines:

Provide an example of a situation where you were assigned a task with a tight deadline, explaining how you prioritized your time and the outcome of the project.

Strong analytical abilities are required to identify injury, illness, and accident trends, and be able to respond to inquires from regulatory agencies, District, and Program personnel. Ability to reason logically and creatively and utilize a variety of analytical techniques to resolve complex issues, organize and set priorities, work independently, analyze data and present ideas and information effectively both orally and in writing and gain and maintain confidence and cooperation of those contacted during the course of work. Exercises a high degree of professionalism, diplomacy, initiative, and independence. Establishes and maintains cooperative and positive work relationships, a demonstrated interest in assuming increasing responsibility, mature judgment and discretion. Knowledge of data management using Microsoft Power Platform tools such as Power Apps, Power Automate, Power Bl, and Share Point.
