The City of Orinda Parks and Recreation Department seeks qualified individuals with the passion and desire to work with youth campers as a summer Recreation Leader (Camp Counselor) in the Recreation Division.   This position takes direction from the Recreation Program Specialist (Camp Director) and reports to the City's full-time Recreation Coordinator.

INTERVIEWS:In-person group interviews will occur on Tuesday, April 15from 4:30 - 6:30 pm OR Thursday, April 17th from 4:30 - 6:30 pm.  Please be prepared to attend one of these pre-set interview times.

MANDATORY TRAINING:Must be available for paid training on Saturday, May 31, 2025

SUMMER CAMP SEASON:Must be available for summer camp season June 2 - August 8, 2025

WORK HOURS:Work hours vary depending on the number of staff and youth participants.  Approximate work hours are Monday through Friday 8:45 am to 4:00 pm and Extended Care from 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm.

Incumbents of the position will provide their own transportation to program site(s). 

Essential Duties:

Recreation Leaders (Camp Counselors) are assigned to the summer day camp programs working with children ages 3 1/2 to 12 years old.  They assist, plan, organize and lead the physical, recreational and social activities of assigned recreation programs under direction of the Camp Director (Recreation Program Specialist) and the Recreation Coordinator.  

  • Bring energy and enthusiasm to the camp environment every day.
  • Safely and appropriately supervise campers at all times.
  • Plan and lead arts, crafts, games and sports according to the theme of the week.
  • Serve as a mentor and role model to campers by modeling positive behavior at all times.
  • Use positive discipline with campers and communicate effectively with parents and guardians.
  • Effectively collaborate with fellow camp staffers and Parks and Recreation Department staff.

Minimum Qualifications:

All City of Orinda employees are expected to uphold and exhibit the City’s core values including serving the public, being respectful and accountable, maintaining professionalism, and demonstrating responsibility.

Education: Must have completed at least ninth (9) grade by the start of camp.  Coursework in recreation, sports, administration, human development, education or related field is preferred.  

Experience: Recreation, athletics and/or education experience is desirable.  Experience teaching and/or working with children and youth age twelve (12) and under is preferred.

Licenses/Certifications: CPR, First Aid, and AED training and/or certification are required prior to the first day of camp.  There will be a CPR, First Aid and AED training on the May 31st Training Day.

Special Requirements:Appointments to this position are contingent upon:

  • A valid work permit issued from school (if under age 18 and have not graduated from high school or received a State Certificate of Proficiency).
  • A post offer, pre-employment live scan criminal history check (over 18 years), drug screen, physical and TB Test required.  Please note that if under 18 some processes may require legal guardian consent.

  • Individuals in the position may not work more than 1,000 hours per year.
  • Individuals in the position will receive sick leave in accordance with California State Law.
  • Individuals in the position will be enrolled in a MissionSquare (ICMA-RC) 457 Deferred Compensation Program with the employee contributing 7.5%; this retirement contribution is in lieu of participating in Social Security.
